PART B: Straight Forward Stuff, No tricks (pretty much).  You either know how to do them or you don’t.  Each is worth 8 marks.  [40 in total] (est. time:  45 minutes)

1.                  Some cells have been found that have an electron transport chain which makes 5 ATP’s for every NADH oxidized, and 4 ATP’s per FADH.  All other aspects of respiration are normal.  How many moles of ATP will be made if 2 moles of glucose were oxidized?

2.                  Sketch the reactions of the Calvin cycle.  Identify the reduction and oxidation reactions.  Make sure you state how many moles of each molecule are needed.

3.                  Write a balance formula for the following reaction:  A di-unstaturated C-18 fatty acid is totally oxidized.

4.                  Jim wants to make a baby with Sue but the two of them are concerned that the baby might have inherit cystic fibrosis (CF).  The rate of CF in the general population is 1 in 40 000.  Sue has a “family with a history” of CF.  The doctors said Sue has a 1 in 4 chance that she is a carrier of CF.  There is no history of CF in Jim’s family.  What are the odds that  their baby will have CF?

5.                  Humans farm Jersey cows for their milk. The data below represents the population of Jersey cows for the southwestern Ontario region.
